Thunderheads

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

Permanent Installation

The Art Collection at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is one of the largest public art displays in Atlanta and the Southeast, offering a dynamic perspective on sport while celebrating the city’s history and culture. Curated by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the collection showcases a range of original paintings, photographs, mixed-media works, and monumental sculptures designed to inspire all who visit the stadium.

Among these works is Thunderheads by Adam Cvijanovic, a sweeping painting named for the towering storm clouds that dominate the composition. Cvijanovic captured his impression of Atlanta’s expansive skyline as viewed from above, blending the real and remembered—specifically, the sensation of flying over a glowing sports field enveloped in amethyst-colored haze.

Known for his immersive, Renaissance-inspired murals, often exceeding 20 feet in length, Cvijanovic combines photorealistic detail with dreamlike atmospheres. His work in Thunderheads reflects his signature technique: collapsing space and time to evoke both grandeur and intimacy. The painting serves not only as a striking portrayal of Atlanta’s unique geography but also as a poetic meditation on flight, light, and memory—resonating deeply within the context of a stadium that celebrates motion, spectacle, and collective experience.
